Playing Games and Liking It: Nilanjanaa Jayant's "Like That" Finds Beauty in the Mess

Nilanjanaa Jayant's "Like That" is a dreamy pop track about being drawn to exactly what's bad for you, and being oddly okay with it. The singer-songwriter, who started creating music in her bedroom during lockdown, brings her signature ethereal sound to a surprisingly relatable confession. Sometimes we kind of like the mind games.
The song opens with guitars and vocals wrapped in padded, reverby atmospherics that immediately set a mellow, introspective mood. When the kick and clap pattern hits on the 1 and 3, the track finds its groove. Simple but effective, keeping things moving without losing that quality. It's modern pop production done right. Clean, spacious, and built for repeat listens.
Melodically, the song works. The hooks are catchy without trying too hard, the kind that stick with you after just a couple of plays. Lines like "Playing with my mind / Guess I kinda like that" land with a mix of self-awareness and resignation that gives the simple lyric more weight than you'd expect. It's the sound of someone fully aware they're in a messy situation but choosing to stay anyway.
The harmonies, and her voice, are a highlight. They're lush and tasteful, adding depth without cluttering the mix.
I personally find a slight issue is in the mix. The vocals don't quite cut through the production as clearly as they should. While the atmospheric quality is nice, it sometimes comes at the cost of hearing the lyrics clearly. For a song built around its lyrical concept, that's a problem worth noting.
What's interesting is how the song handles its ending. Instead of building to a loud climax and staying there, "Like That" starts stripping away layers and getting quieter as it closes out. Most pop songs keep the energy up or fade out at full volume. This approach feels more like an exhale, like the emotional intensity dissipating once the confession is made. It's a smart structural decision that makes the song feel more human and less formulaic.
Lyrically, the song captures that modern dating predicament of being kept "on standby" and having your mind played with, but admitting you're kind of into it.
"Like That" is definitely a mood.
Jayant is developing her sound and shows real promise in the space. I for one shall be following her journey and songs, and hope tremendous growth.
